Don’t undervalue the power of social media; the growing presence of technology in our culture has information–and misinformation–flowing lightning fast. The Associated Press (AP) had their Twitter account hacked at 1:07 p.m. on April 24; hackers used the profile to tweet, “Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured.”

Fiona’s Lemonade Day stand in Eureka, CA
The results are now in from Humboldt Lemonade Day on June 2 and a total of 256 young entrepreneurs learned what it takes to start a business by opening lemonade stands and many opted to give back to their community.
Of the nearly 60 stands that were opened in Humboldt County on lemonade day, local youth sold more than 3,100 cups of lemonade and earned an estimated $6,125 with a net profit of $3,695, according to the National Lemonade Day report released just recently. The event is part of a national fun and experiential learning program that teaches kids and teens how to start, own and operate their own business using a classic American example: the lemonade stand.

The Arcata Economic Development Corporation is set to increase its online presence and availability to businesses starting this month by collaborating with Humboldt County internet marketing company Strategic eMarketing.
The AEDC helps businesses meet the challenge of acquiring capital and re-financing that can help them fulfill their dreams of launching a new enterprise or expanding an existing business to the next level. For more than 30 years, the AEDC has loaned over $47 million to local businesses that have helped entrepreneurs grow with the community.
With more communication with the public via social media and other avenues, the AEDC hopes to extend its reach and help even more businesses attain their goals, said Program Director Susan Seaman. By developing and maintaining the AEDC Facebook page and a soon-to-launch blog at http://www.aedc1.org/, Strategic eMarketing will work with the AEDC to cultivate its online presence.
This isn’t the first time the AEDC and Strategic eMarketing have worked together — Strategic eMarketing was a sponsor of Humboldt Lemonade Day and provided website design, social media management and blog management to http://humboldt.lemonadeday.org/. The AEDC coordinates the annual Humboldt Lemonade Day to support and encourage young entrepreneurs.
Several programs are available through the AEDC, and the social media outreach and blogging will focus on educating businesses and young entrepreneurs about these opportunities. The content will also focus on the local successes of companies not just in the Arcata area, but any of the clients AEDC has worked with to build better businesses.
